Ellen DeGeneres is known today as the first openly gay woman on prime time television, and people love her for it. However, there was a time when she was afraid of how the public eye would react to her sexual orientation. During her interview on ABC’s “20/20″ in April 1997, she said, “If they found out I was gay, maybe they wouldn’t applaud. Maybe they wouldn’t laugh. Maybe they wouldn’t like me if they knew that I was gay.” Days later, on April 20th, she aired an episode on her show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” called “The Puppy Episode” where DeGeneres opens up to her psychiatrist, played by Oprah Winfrey. Not only did the audience respond well – so did the public. ABC News stated in May 2012 that in 1996, “The public approval rating for gay marriage was 27 percent. It is more than 50 percent today…and there are now 34 shows featuring gay characters in leading and supporting roles—not including reality TV—compared to only 11 shows in 1997.” Thanks, Ellen, for shaking things up and changing the media for the better.
